Can Dogs Eat Onions, Garlic, & Leeks? Allium Poisoning & Heinz Body Anemia

Alliums contain thiosulfate, which damages canine red blood cells and causes severe hemolytic anemia. Powdered seasonings are especially toxic.

Data reviewed October 24, 2026

The entire Allium family—including onions, garlic, shallots, leeks, scallions, and chives—contains organosulfur compounds and thiosulfates. Dogs lack the glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase enzyme required to digest these compounds. The resulting oxidative stress ruptures red blood cells, causing life-threatening Heinz body hemolytic anemia.

Allium Toxicity Hierarchy in Dogs
Allium Form Potency Factor Toxic Dose (0.5% body weight) Common Household Source
Garlic Powder5x More Potent Than Raw1/4 teaspoon per 10 lbsBarbecue rubs, seasoned meats
Onion Powder5x More Potent Than Raw1/2 teaspoon per 10 lbsBroths, soups, pasta sauces

Delayed Symptoms of Allium Poisoning

Unlike chocolate which acts quickly, allium toxicity often delays symptoms for 3 to 5 days after ingestion. As red blood cells lyse, the dog develops pale gums, lethargy, dark reddish-brown urine (hemoglobinuria), rapid breathing, and jaundice.

Treatment for Hemolytic Anemia

Veterinarians run complete blood counts (CBC) with blood smears to quantify Heinz bodies. Hospitalization with oxygen therapy, IV fluids, and potentially blood transfusions is required in severe cases.

Frequently asked questions

Can dogs have chicken broth cooked with onions?
No. The water-soluble thiosulfates leach directly into the broth during simmering. Only feed certified allium-free bone broth formulated specifically for pets.
Is cooked garlic safer than raw garlic for dogs?
No. Heat does not degrade the sulfur compounds responsible for red blood cell destruction. Cooked onions and garlic are just as dangerous as raw.
