Frequently asked questions
- Why is chocolate poisonous to dogs but safe for humans?
- Dogs metabolize theobromine and caffeine (methylxanthines) much more slowly than humans. While humans clear theobromine in 2 to 3 hours, a dog requires up to 17.5 hours, allowing the compound to accumulate to toxic levels in cardiac and neural tissue.
- Should I induce vomiting with hydrogen peroxide at home?
- Never induce vomiting without explicit instruction from a veterinarian. Hydrogen peroxide can cause severe hemorrhagic gastritis in dogs and is strictly contraindicated if the pet is showing tremors, lethargy, or has ingested caustic wrappers.
