The 5-Second Dehydration Skin-Tent Check
Gently pinch the skin over your pet's shoulder blades and lift it upward into a tent, then release. In a hydrated pet, the skin snaps back immediately into place. If the skin flattens slowly or remains elevated in a tent, your pet is experiencing moderate to severe dehydration. Check for tacky, dry gums.

Frequently asked questions
- How much water does a healthy dog drink per day?
- On average, a healthy dog drinks between 0.5 and 1.0 fluid ounce of water per pound of body weight daily. A 40-pound dog typically drinks between 20 and 40 ounces (2.5 to 5 cups) per day.
- Why do cats drink less water than dogs?
- Cats evolved from desert feline ancestors and possess a low innate thirst drive. Because cats naturally concentrate their urine, feeding wet food or using recirculating water fountains is critical to prevent urinary tract blockages and kidney disease.
